Local heritage book of Czychen (Kirchspiel)
Tab. 1: Places in the area of former parisch Czychen Over the years the area of the former Czychen parish [which had been founded during the Reformation] included the villages, estates and dwelling places shown in the above table. More information and relevant maps can be accessed via Meyer's Gazetteer https://www.meyersgaz.org. Originally the contents of the duplicates of the baptismal registers 1800-1820 had been captured by Raymont Dorra and published in Excel-format on his homepage http://www.raymontdorra.info/ahnen/Czychen/kirchspiel_czychen.html, which also contains an extensive description of the Czychen parish. In 1909 Rose [9] published a catalog of all the Protestant church registers in East and West Prussia existing at that time. Since then the Czychen inventory has changed drastically. While originally the complete set of the Czychen registers from 1765 onwards had been preserved, now only the duplicate copies of the baptismal registers 1800-65 and of the death registers 1838-1865 exist, which in 1970 have been filmed, and recently digitised, by the Genealogical Society of Utah [7]. According to Grigoleit [10] the registers missing for the period up to 1915 were lost during World War I, while the church registers kept from 1915 disappeared towards the end of World War II. In the Kingdom of Prussia civil registration was introduced from about October 1874, and the area of the Czychen parish was divided into the registration precincts of Czychen, Haasznen and Statzen. In 1944 registration offices were operating in Bolken and Statzen. However, until now no civil registration records of any of these offices have surfaced. Special thanks go to Cornelia Thielicke [deceased in March 2018] for her energetic assistance in the ongoing capture of the Czychen church registers from 1820 onwards. Hopefully newly captured data will be added on a continual basis, the Czychen heritage books thus will remain a permanent construction site.
